Campaigners have hailed the launch of Nigeria’s first sex offender register as a vital step towards tackling reported cases of sexual abuse, which are rising across the country.
The publicly accessible onlineregister of people prosecuted for sexual violence since 2015 will allow public bodies and police authorities to conduct background checks and identify repeat offenders.
Oluwaseun Osowobi, the director of Stand To End Rape, a Nigerian non-government organisation that supports survivors of sexual violence, said: “If a case is reported anywhere in the country, the case is now on the register. It means that offenders have nowhere to hide.”
Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, along with 15 non-governmental organisations, supported by the British Council, will monitor reported cases of sexual abuse, providing monthly updates to the online register.
“This is the first of its kind in Nigeria”, said Beatrice Jedy-Agba, the executive secretary of the agency. “It enables bodies such as schools [and] hospitals to conduct background checks and it will deter sex offenders because they will know their names will be published, affecting their employment and role in society.”
Wow. They really are proud of something that will never work or be successful at preventing crap.
The registry will never be a deterrent or a preventative tool. All it does is shame people and fosters a climate of perpetual hate, not safety.
Oh good… The one nation in the world that had actively operating slavery until the 1950s and STILL tracks who is descended of those slaves (for purposes of social exclusion… Their very own version of JIm Crow) has a sex offender registry.

Brilliant, Nigeria has massive slums with nearly a million people that don’t even have toilets, they still go to the bathroom in the river, yet they have adopted a registry. I wonder if they got guidance and direction for this from many of the empty headed politicians in the US?
I’ve seen enough videos online of people being killed in Nigeria, with flaming tires thrown around their necks for being “accused” of stealing a cell phone of all things, so I expect to see nothing but countless deaths due to their registry.
Nigeria is exactly the kind of country that I would expect would have public Registries of their citizens. I think they enjoy shaming people and think it is good. I expect they would be happy if the people listed on their Registries were attacked and killed. That is exactly the kind of third world, cesspool, backwards country that I think they are.
I feel as if the weapon of choice there might be machetes and if it is, that is probably good because I would guess that at least the people who are listed on their Registries could (probably) arm themselves at an equal level as the people who will try to kill them and their families. So that is better than in Amerika at least. Registered People in Amerika should be given guns from big government. But not only is that not done, they supposedly can’t even have guns!
Amerika is also a third world, cesspool, backwards country with Registries. Very hateful place.
